To combat this issue, Washington Department of Licensing (DOL) has introduced a new security feature for driver's licenses and identification cards that will make it more difficult for scammers to create counterfeit IDs or fraudulent documents. The new security enhancement is known as a "scannable barcode." It is a three-dimensional barcode composed of data that can be easily read by machines that scan IDs. These barcodes will contain encrypted information meant to prevent fraud. The scannable barcode provides an added level of security to the State of Washington ID cards. When an ID is scanned, the encrypted information will identify counterfeit IDs and alert the person scanning the ID. This enhances the efficiency of those who check IDs, such as law enforcement officials or employees in businesses that sell age-restricted products.
